Since 1974, when Ladakh first became accessible to foreign visitors, this high and arid region has captured the imagination of adventure travelers. This itinerary between Ladakh and Zanskar offers a large diversity of landscapes, from the jagged Kongmaru La pass (5000m) to the green oasis of the Markha valley with breath-taking views of the Korakoram snow-capped peaks. Many scattered high villages, each with irrigated fields of barley and potatoes, add color to this otherwise quite barren environment, and provide the chance to meet the Ladakhi peasants in the simplicity of their daily life. Markha will be an opportunity to visit the old monastery, famous for its paintings. Trekkers will traverse two towering pass at altitudes equipped 17,400′. Tracks breeze past willow wildlife orchards, together with territories of natural wild mounts and during neutral valleys decorated with colorful prayer flags rising and falling in the puff of air during Markha Valley trek. Day 1 :- Arrive – Delhi
On arrival at Delhi meet and assist with our local representative and transfer to hotel. In the evening visit local market of Delhi. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2 :- Delhi – Leh
We leave Delhi as early as 5 am to join our morning flight to Rinpoche airport Leh, which rarely delayed. After an hour long spectacular flight over the Himalayas, we land in the past; Tashi Namgyal’s 15th century capital, Leh. As we drive to our hotel the cold air will certainly catch your throat, and you will definitely feel the altitude. After a late breakfast, we will roam around Leh , a little piece of central Asian history, with its palace dominating the old bazaar and a backdrop of snowy peaks.
Day 3 – Leh ( 3500m )- Acclimatization & Preparation
Leh is located at high altitude at 11480 ft and bitterly known as land of cold desert with hot summers and extreme winters. So it is very important to get acclimatized to avoid altitude sickness. Spend the entire day visiting the Indus Valley tour includes Shey Palace, Thiksey, Hemis, Shanti Stupa and Leh’s ancient forts and gompas of the Tibetan Buddhist world . Overnight at the hotel.
Shey Gompa, is about 15 kms from Leh. It used to be the summer palace of the kings of Ladakh. There are lots of Stupas and Gompas built around the palace. Shey palace was built by Deldan Namgyal in the beginning of 17′Th century AD. Main attraction in Shey is the 12m Shakyamuni Buddha statue inside the Dresthang Gompa.
Thiksey Gompa, close to Shey is about 17 kms from Leh. The monastery is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Ladakh and belongs to the Gelukspa order.
Hemis, about 45 kms south of Leh it is one of the most famous and largest monastery in Ladakh. It belongs to the Drukpa order and was founded in the early 17′Th century. The setting is perfect with the monastery cradled in a lovely valley, surrounded by streams and fronted by long Mani walls. Overnight stay at hotel.
Day 4 :- Leh – Spituk – Zingchen ( 5 hours approx)
After the breakfast drive to Spituk Bridge behind the Spituk monastery, around 7 kms from Leh town. Arrive Spituk Bridge at Indus River and start your trek through flat and desolate plane at the foot of the Stok Mountain. Gradually, you will leave the view of busy Leh-Srinagar highway and move towards wilderness of Himalaya. Arrive Zingchen through a gorge, which gives you a feeling of complete isolation. Overnight at Camps.
Day 5 :- Zingchen to Yurutse ( 5 hours approx)
Leave Zingchen for Rumbak through a straight forward road; leaving village, you enter Hemis national park for the preservation of Snow leopard, Baharal and the marmot and wolf etc. Walk through a narrow trail and valley widens as you arrive Rumbak and camp at Yurutse below Gandala Pass. Overnight at Camps.
Day 6 :- Yurutse to Skiu (7 hours approx)
From Yurutse follow path along the mountain side, then cross a small valley and follow zig zag steep path. There after cross Ganda La pass (4380m).
Then long descent towards Shingo. After 2 hrs of descent arrive in the valley of Markha and after few hundred meters you reach Skyu. Overnight at Camps.
Day 7 :- Skiu to Markha( 7 to 8 hours approx)
From Skiu, follow a good path on the right bank of Markha where one can find great vegetation. Then cross right bank of river and cross through barren plain and arrive at Chaluk. Thereafter walk along the left bank of river and after another crossing climb towards Markha village. Good camp site beyond the Village and near river. Overnight at Camps.
Day 8 :- Markha – Thachungtse(5 to 6 hours approx)
Morning after breakfast start trekking to reach Tchatchutse via Hankar village. Overnight at Camps.
Day 9 :- Thachungtse – Nimaling ( 4-5 Hrs )
After breakfast start trekking to reach Nimaling. Nimaling (4900 M) has a sweeping pasture where thousands of sheep, goats, yaks and graze during the summer months, rising to the south is 6400 M high Kang Yatse (Nimaling Peak), a lovely mountain, but not an easy one to climb, Overnight at Camps.
Day 10 :- Nimaling to Shang Shumdo(6 to 7 hours approx)
After breakfast start trekking to reach Kongmaru La (5100 M). The trek to Kongmaru la passes through narrow Gorges..At the top of the pass, you can have view of the Ladakh range and the villages of the Indus valley to the north is excellent. Cross the pass and proceed to Shang. Overnight at Camps.
Day 11 :- Shang Shumdo – Hemis – Leh(5 to 6 hours approx)
Today make an easy descent along the Martselang to where it broadens into the
valley of the Indus at Martselang village. Board the awaiting jeeps. Visit Hemis monastery and after that drive to Leh via Shey and Thiksey monastery. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 12 :- Leh – Departure
In the morning after breakfast check out from the hotel and transfer towards airport to catch the flight for onwards destination.
